Do you know what extra virgin olive oil is compared to regular olive oil?

Extra virgin olive oil sounds exotic doesn't it? What comes to mind when you hear these words? I picture someone pressing olives that are barely ripe, how about you? In fact extra virgin olive oil means that the oil has less than one percent of acid. Essentially the acids reduce the flavor in the olives, whish is why they also subject the olive oil to blind taste tests as part of the certification process. The blind taste tests are similar to wine taste tests.

Olive Leaf Extract

Olive leaf extract comes from the leave of olive trees and was used in ancient times to treat various health issues. Again the leaf is packed with free radical fighting antioxidants and is considered to be medicinal.

Olive Oil Varieties

Olive oil comes in many different varieties from flavorful to bland or virgin to extra light.  As with most foods the unrefined olive oil is the better one for flavor and nutrition.  The refined one usually uses heat and chemicals to extract the last available amount of oil from the already pressed and repressed olive mash. Before we get into the different processes involved, let us look at the varieties.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Extra virgin is the best grade. The good grade olives are pressed for the first time with nothing more than the original and natural cold press method that has been around for thousands of years. The oil has less than one percent acidity and the best flavor that is certified by a taster. You can read more on this unrefined oil here

Read more about the different varieties and which ones are pure unrefined and which ones are heavily processed using chemical solvents and intense heat and pressure.
